Illinois Protects Assisted Living Facilities With New Screening Rule
In July 2005, the state of Illinois passed a bill drafting new emergency rules requiring that on or before July 21, 2005, assisted living facilities must compare their current residents against the Illinois Department of Corrections Sex Offender Database and the Illinois State Sex Offender Registry. And, by January 1, 2006, facilities must screen all current residents using the Illinois Statewide Criminal Record. To better detail the term “assisted living,” it impacts skilled nursing, intermediate care, shelter care, skilled long-term care for those under 22 years and intermediate care for the developmentally disabled. By taking these measures, assisted living facilities can protect residents as well as employees from a potential felon and/or sex offender.

Bill Requires Background Checks for Medical Students in Illinois
The Illinois General Assembly approved legislation on November 4, 2005 requiring all students applying for medical school to undergo criminal background checks. The legislation requires medical schools to perform a criminal background check through the Illinois State Police to check for violent felonies. This legislation does not prevent the applicant from becoming a doctor but only protects the institution if the candidate is turned down for admission because of the background check.

Employee Spotlight: Holley Townes-Newell, Integrations Manager
USIS likes to hire employees who stick around. Holley Townes-Newell is a prime example of one such team member. Twelve years ago, Townes-Newell began her career at USIS in Data Entry and Customer Service. Over the years, Townes-Newell has found new roles in the company and currently assists clients as Integrations Manager – her position for the last three years.
As the Integrations Manager, she works with customers to integrate their systems, such as HRIS systems, with the USIS ordering platform so clients can better manage their information. Her role lends her skills as one of USIS’ important liaisons with our customers.
